The NSW Government Licensing Service (GLS) is used to manage licensing across several NSW Government portfolios, covering a wide array of regulatory regimes. These services are provided across a diverse set of industries and community groups. They can be classified roughly as follows:
- Business Licences issued to small and large businesses
- Occupational and Trade Licences
- Recreational Licences issued to members of the public
- Community and Social Service Related Licences
- Events, Projects, Permits, Assets & Other Licences
Below is a list and some basic statistics of various categories of licences managed via the NSW Government Licensing Service.
Note: The licence numbers in the sections below indicate approximate volume of licence records held in the Government Licensing System. This comprises licences in all statuses (e.g. Current, Expired, Suspended, Cancelled, etc.) as of May 2011.

Every year, GLS is used to issue a large number of one-off Event and Project Permits.
- 69,300+ Short term (3 days and 1 month) Recreational Fishing Permits were issued in the last 12 months by Department of Primary Industries
- 14,200+ Trade Promotion & Lottery Permits issued on average every year by the NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing
- 19,000+ Owner Builder Permits issued annually by Fair Trading
- 2,200+ Native Animal Import / Export Licences issued on average every year by the Office of Environment and Heritage
- 600+ Aquatic Event Licences, by Maritime Authority of NSW on average every year
In addition, GLS is used to manage
